Elvis Presley was born to parents of the most modest means. His father, Vernon and Mother, Gladys Presley, lived in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi when Elvis was born on January 8, 1935. Fate had him live life as an only child- his only sibling, twin brother Jessie Garon, was stillborn.
In 1948, the Presleys moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Elvis graduated from Humes High School in 1953.
All around him we the influences of pop and country music. But gospel music probably had one of the greatest influences in his music and in his soul, thanks to the many all-night gospel sing-ins he attended as a Memphis teenager. Black R&B was there too, and certainly left an indelible mark.
In 1954, Elvis started his singing career with the Sun Records label in Memphis, and then later, in 1955, RCA Victor took over his contract. By 1956, he was internationally famous. Elvis was a true pioneer, worthy of the name "King of Rock & Roll".
